Expansive Gardens and Peaceful Vibes
This expansive house overlooking close to three-quarters of a hectare of peaceful, park-like gardens and fields in Whalers Gate just keeps on giving. The unique, sprawling four-bedroom home at 62f Poplar Grove has been cleverly constructed in a semi-circular design ensuring maximum sunshine and enabling panoramic views of the mature trees and terraced gardens below. An attached flat, with its own entrance and garage, was added to the house by the original owners. Current owners fell in love with the 6878sq m (1.7acres) property eight years ago and embarked on extensive renovations of the house built in 1982. They opened up the lounge and kitchen, and upgraded the master bedroom and replaced the windows. They added a large, well-appointed ensuite and revamped the family bathroom next door. Dated exposed beams were removed from the high-pitched sloping ceilings, double insulation was added to the walls while windows were double-glazed. They installed gas, and gas cook top in the well-appointed and modernised central kitchen. All the water pipes were replaced and led lights were added to the renovated areas of the house. A good-sized laundry leads directly to the rear of the house which has a closed off backyard well suited to safely leave the family dog when you are heading out. The three other bedrooms lead directly onto the glassed patio. One of the three is connected to a central rumpus area with built-in desks where their three daughters often did their study before heading off to university. The rumpus room downstairs also leads down to the large double garage. From the rumpus room, quirky steps lead up to the self-contained flat, added in 1996. It has a beautiful view across to the mountain and an open plan dining and lounge area. It has a double bedroom and a versatile extra little room which could have a multitude of uses, such as a hobby/sewing room. The flat, with its separate entrance, drive way and garage could have multiple uses - either as a granny flat, for extended family members, or to rent out as an additional income. Additional extras include a little hobby house in the back garden which has a power point and was used by a keen potter. There is another large shed in the entrance way which is currently housing tropical fish and tools. There is plenty of room for tools in the larger of the two garages. Above the long driveway is a grassy hillside where pet sheep are happy to keep the grass down. The big back lawn below the house is surrounded by mature trees, many of them fruit trees and natives. The warmth of the north-facing terraces allows the banana tree to fruit and the feijoas, kiwifruit vine, citrus and avocado trees to flourish. The owner makes short work of the lawns, storing his ride-on mower in the shed at the bottom of the garden. The boundary overlooks the council-owned tree-filled fields surrounding the Mangaotuku Stream. Facing retirement and an empty nest, the couple have made the tough decision to sell their parkland home, say goodbye to their pet sheep, and head off to the South Island where they intend to make new memories and be closer to their first grandchild.
